Cosmos is an easy and dependable plant to start from seed. This year, we planted the seedlings in containers. The plants are approximately 18 inches high. The feather-like leaves dance in the wind. Children get such a kick out of planting a tiny seed and watching it grow and grow. The real reward, of course, is the flower or fruit (in the case of our tomato plants!) For a couple of dollars, it is well worth purchasing a pack of cosmos seeds and planting in them indoors, perhaps in May (for Nova Scotia.) You can also start the plant directly in an outdoor container, just watch out for frost in May and June.
